The latest publication (2023) shows Slipping rib syndrome is a poorly understood diagnosis resulting in significantly delayed and unnecessary diagnostic tests.
Early and accurate diagnosis coupled with timely referral to a provider with expertise in SRS is the most important aspect of treatment.
Intercostal Neuralgia is characterized by neuropathic pain in the distribution of affected intercostal nerve(s) (along the ribs, chest, or abdomen) that commonly manifests as a sharp, aching, radiating, burning, or stabbing pain and may be associated with paresthesia such as numbness and tingling.
- Opioids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), anticonvulsants, and topical medications (capsaicin, transdermal lidocaine) are the mainstays of adjunctive therapy.
- In the chronic setting of neuropathic pain, tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are also options. However, more studies are needed.
*Different people respond to medication differently, and it may take a while for your doctor to find pain medications that help you.
In mild to moderate cases, postural correction with back and core strengthening exercises.
Isometric exercises are highly recommended because they avoid the repetitive nerve-pinching that occurs with exercises like sit-ups and crunches.
Such as,
TENS (Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation)
Intercostal nerve block injection treatment
Ultrasound-guided procedures for pain management
*Activities to Avoid: Heavy lifting, Twisting, Pushing, and Pulling.
The surgical procedures for SRS involve stabilizing the rib(s) that cause damaged or irritated intercostal nerves and surrounding areas.
The latest surgical techniques have been updated to include
resection, suturing, plating, and combined techniques.
*It is important to note that everyone has different anatomy and medical conditions. If you are considering SRS surgery, your surgeon should create a personalized surgery plan based on your specific condition. They should also explain the reasons behind the chosen surgical techniques, such as resection, suturing, plating, or combinations, in order to achieve successful surgical outcomes.
We highly recommend seeking multiple opinions to ensure the best fit for you as well.
